Dating back thousands of years, cannabis has been used medically by countless cultures. There is evidence of cannabis plants being harvested for human use as early as 2000 BCE in western culture and in China, there are records of crop harvesting all the back to 5,000 BCE.

1553

Hemp was so important for developing a balanced society that in 1553, King Henry VIII proclaimed at least ¼ of an acre should be set aside for hemp planting. During the 19th century, William Osler, who many consider being one of the key figures in helping to pave the way for advances in modern medicine, touted the healing characteristics of cannabis for migraines.

1937

The exploration and research of cannabis with modern science took a major hit in 1937 as the government began regulating cannabis with the Marijuana Tax Act. It wasn’t until 1969 that the act was ruled unconstitutional only to have marijuana become criminalized shortly after.

1963

Just after the Marijuana Tax Act was passed, Dr. Roger Adams discovered an isolated compound of CBD during his research. While the full extent of CBD’s make-up wasn’t understood until 1963 by chemist Raphael Mechoulam. The onslaught of anti-drugs laws that were passed during those years slowed down the research development of the CBD extract.

1970

Research into the modern medical uses of CBD oil hit an upswing in the 1970s when the British Pharmacopeia began implementing tinctures made from CBD into their regular use.

2018

The recent breakthrough in cannabis production came in 2018 with the signing of the Farm Bill, legalizing the production of industrial hemp in all 50 states. This positive step has created an opportunity to harness the benefits of CBD for everything from infused seltzers to daily pills designed to achieve a better sense of wellness.

While the CBD compound was discovered well before the THC isolate, most of the research has been directed towards understanding THC. Science is slowly cracking the code of CBD and helping producers and manufactures to find the best and purest ways to craft CBD-based products. With over 4,000 years of cultivation and medical use, it’s been recent innovations in technology, such as nanotechnology, that are elevating CBD oil into a trusted science-driven wellness choice.
